Here’s a new tune called New Day, that I finished recently. Feeling inspired.

Just bought a tri-level penthouse loft in West Hollywood! I’m so stoked to finally be here, I love it!
I’m still unpacking boxes and getting settled, but the studio downstairs is set up and ready to go. Can’t wait to start teaching and producing!
Stay tuned…

Hit Song Central wrote the song (Love Ate My Brain) featured in this clip of the feature film, And Then Came Lola. The song is performed by Hit Song Central‘s Natalia Bortolotti and Jeffrey Scott Smith (aka the power-pop band, The Good Evil). The film also features two other Hit Song Central songs, Butterfly Crush and Headbangers.
This clip features Ashleigh Sumner (as Lola) and Jenoa Harlow. Animation by Jett Atwood. Check out the whole movie, it’s awesome! And Then Came Lola: http://www.andthencamelola.com

This is a country-folk song that I wrote with Scotty (my frequent co-writer and business partner in Hit Song Central). It started out as a short instrumental called Separation that Scotty had composed for Film/TV placement. One night in LA, I started singing a melody for it and thought we should flesh out a song. So, I refined the melody and started writing lyrics. Fortunately, he loved it. So, we recorded a new full vocal version. Originally, I sang it, but it didn’t feel right. The song had a country vibe to it and I felt it needed a country delivery. So, I asked my favorite country singer, Maria Mandrussow, to come in and give it the country treatment. She really brought the song to life! It has just the right amount of sweetness and melancholy. Thanks Maria!

This song recently won the VH1 Song of the Year contest. The original version had a pretty monotone verse vocal with a megaphone effect. It was cool, but I decided it needed to be more dynamic, so I changed it so that there’s a call and response style verse, with half of it as a megaphone effect and the other with some different effects, which makes one feel upfront and the other in the background. I like this version SO much better. Hope you do, too.
Recorded this one in GarageBand, using my new love, the AxiomPro 49. No, it’s not the “in love” kind of love, but it comes pretty close.
Beauty in Breaking Down happened really organically and quickly. I arranged the music first, which I rarely do, came up with a chorus melody I liked, then wrote the verse kind of stream-of consciousness. Then, I wrote the chorus and bridge lyrics. I almost always start with a chorus melody first, so this was really unusual.
The song is about the the beauty of breaking down and building back up. Sometimes when it seems like your whole world is coming apart, it may be that things are actually coming together for the first time. It’s like shedding your old wrinkled skin and finding new smoother skin underneath. Now, if only I could bottle that and sell it to the masses!

I decided to call this song Shadows because it’s moody and haunting… and because I couldn’t come up with a better title.
I had originally intended to write lyrics and then decided that it sounded better just the way it is. I didn’t make up a language ala Elizabeth Frasier (she’s freaking amazing!) but the vocalizing is along the same lines… sort of.
This is the first time I’ve recorded my V-Drums:
They sound pretty good, I’m surprised. Looks like I’ll be able to use them in my home studio recordings after all.
I also used:
I’m in LOVE with my Axiom Pro.
Cool, surfy, retro sound. It’s a girly guitar, but it plays as well as any other.
I usually use Logic (or ProTools at the Hit Song Central studio), but I recorded this one with GarageBand. GB keeps getting better and it’s fun and user-friendly.
